در صورتیکه طرفداران مگنوس کارلسن توقع داشتند تا خوشبختی به او روی آورد و نتایج نه چندان خوب مسابقات المپیاد شطرنج را به فراموشی بسپرند اما در دور اول مسابقات استادان بیلبائو این امر امکان نیافت و نوار ناکامیهای کارلسن پاره نشد و اینبار مغلوب ولادیمیر کرامنیک شد.کرامنیک در این بازی و هنگامی که حریف از فرصتهای بدست آمده استفاده لام را نبرد نهایت استفاده را برد و یک برد عالی را به نام خود ثبت کرد تا ۳ امتیاز این با را به نام خود واریز کند.آناند و شیروف در دفاع روی لوپز و در شاخه برلین هیچگونه نو آوری را به نمایش نگذاشتند تا بازی در ۴۱ حرکت به تساوی برسد...

• مسابقات استادان بیلبائو از ۹ اکتبر تا ۱۵ اکتبر و در شش دور به صورت رفت و برگشت انجام می شود.
• این مسابقات با کنترل زمانی ۹۰ دقیقه برای ۴۰ حرکت و ۶۰ دقیقه برای مابقی بازی و به علاوه ۱۰ ثانیه پاداش حرکت از حرکت ۴۱ برگزار می شود.
• این بازیها راس ساعت ۱۸:۳۰ به وقت تهران آغاز می شود.
• روز سه شنبه ۱۲ اکتبر به عنوان روز استراحت در نظر گرفته شده است.

نتایج دور اول

قویترین تورنمنت تاریخ به حیث بازیکنان با بالاترین درجه بین المللی با برد و باخت آغاز شد، در دور اول مسابقات استادان بیلبائو مگنوس کارلسن بار دیگر پس از نتایج نچندان خوب در المپیاد خانتی مانسیسک که از سال ۲۰۰۷ بی سابقه بوده است، نتوانست شروعی خوب داشته باشد و در مقابل کرامنیک در حالیکه می توانست فرصتهای به تساوی کشیدن بازی را غنیمت شمرد، باخت تا کرامنیک یک شروع رویایی داشته باشد.

Instead 20.Nf3 would have kept black under lock and key. 20...g4 would be no worry after 21.Ne1 Nd7 22.f4! 20...Kf8?!This was Carlsen's chance to play 20...d5! and regain balance. در بازی دوم آلکسی شیروف در مقابل ویسواناتان آناند دفاع روی لوپز در شاخه برلین روبرو شد.این شاخه را کرامنیک در مسابقات قهرمانی جهان در سال ۲۰۰۰ و در مقابل کاسپاروف به دفعات به کار برد و نتیجه خوبی به جا گذاشت .در این واریانت وزیرها خیلی زود تعویض می شود و بازی متعادل می گردد.نتیجه این بازی در ۴۱ حرکت به تساوی رسید.
